Pre-Call Homework: Preparing for Your Senior Doula Advisor Consultation
1. Your Path to Becoming a Confident Doula
Welcome to the first official step of your professional journey with the International Doula Institute (I-D-I).

Our mission at I-D-I is to help caring individuals like you turn a heartfelt calling into a sustainable profession. This call is designed to be the bridge between a “vague dream” and a “clear plan.” We aren’t just discussing a course; we are mapping out your transformation. To make the most of our time, you must arrive prepared to discuss your goals with clarity and intention.
2. The I-D-I Difference: The Confidence-First Training System™
At I-D-I, we know that information alone is insufficient. You can memorize every book on birth, but if you don’t have the confidence to step into a birthing room, you cannot serve the family effectively. Our philosophy prioritizes “becoming the person” who can support a family with unwavering presence.
We achieve this through the Five Pillars of Confident Doula Training™:
- Role and Scope: Master the professional boundaries and the specific, high-impact role a doula plays in the birthing team.
- Perinatal Knowledge: Gain expert-level mastery of pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and feeding support.
- Communication & Emotional Support: Develop the “soft skills” and emotional intelligence required for real-world bedside decision-making.
- Practical Application: Move beyond theory through hands-on assignments, role plays, and direct instructor feedback that ensures you are “doing it right.”
- Certification Readiness: Step into the field with a concrete plan to serve and a professional identity families can trust.
3. Practical Skill Mini-Lab: Labor Support Techniques
A doula’s value is often found in their hands. As part of your homework, we want you to practice a fundamental physical comfort measure.
Practice Prompt: Counter PressureMany people in labor LOVE counter pressure on the hips and sacrum. It is a vital tool for helping families navigate the high intensity of contractions with significantly more comfort.
- The Goal: To counteract the internal pressure of the baby moving through the pelvis by applying external pressure.
- The Action: Find a partner or friend. Have them lean forward against a wall or table. During a “mock contraction,” apply firm, steady pressure with the palms of your hands to their hips or the sacrum (the flat bone at the base of the spine).
- The Feedback: Ask your partner how the pressure feels. Is it too light? Too heavy? Mastering the “feel” of this intensity management is a hallmark of a skilled doula.
“Counter pressure on the hips is everything. It changes the entire experience of a contraction from overwhelming to manageable.” — I-D-I Training Insight
4. The Ripple Effect: Voices from the I-D-I Community
The reviews we receive at I-D-I remind us exactly why we do what we do. Our graduates are making a meaningful difference for moms and babies every day, moving from “I think I want to do this” to “I know how to support families.”
As you prepare for our call, remember the core heart of this work: “By doing what you love, you inspire and awaken the hearts of others.”
Student Wins & Pathways:
- The Healthcare-to-Doula Confidence Pathway™: We provide a specific mechanism for CNAs, nurses, and medical assistants to bridge their existing bedside skills into the world of doula support without starting from zero.
- Parenting While Progressing: Many of our most successful students finish their certification while parenting or working full-time, thanks to our flexible, online structure.
- The Readiness Transformation: Students consistently report that receiving personalized instructor feedback was the exact moment they felt truly ready to take their first paying client.

6. The Meaning of Success
Success at I-D-I is not a vague promise; it is a result of “Success Math”:Consistency + Application + Feedback = Real-World Readiness.
While I-D-I provides the expert-developed path and the support of real people, you must be the one to “walk the path.”
Important Caveats:
- Online does not mean unsupported: You will have real instructors guiding you.
- Simple does not mean shallow: Our system is designed to be comprehensive without the overwhelm.
- Work is required: You must take the assignments seriously to build the confidence required for this sacred work.
Bring your questions and your passion to our call. Our goal is for you to leave our conversation with more clarity than you have ever had about your future in birth work. We look forward to speaking with you.
