Become a Doula Today! As the Kids Head Back to School, You Can Learn Too!

August 10, 2024

As summer slips away and the kids are headed back to school, you might find yourself with a little more time on your hands. This makes now the perfect time to do something for YOU! You can become a doula, and you can start today.

Why now? As a busy parent, I know back to school time still doesn’t mean tons of free time. However, you might find an extra hour or two each day with a bit more free time. If that’s the case, you can dive in a learn while your kids are learning too.

When the kids go back to school, it’s an opportunity to reclaim some of your time and focus on personal growth. For parents, especially mothers who have dedicated years to nurturing their children, this transition can be the ideal moment to explore a new passion. Becoming a doula is not just about learning new skills; it’s about embracing a role that is deeply rooted in compassion, care, and empowerment—qualities many parents have honed over the years.

How Do I Become a Doula While The Kids Are At School?

At the International Doula Institute, we pride ourselves on being an accessible program which can fit into nearly any schedule. In fact, the bulk of your doula training can even be done right from your smartphone!

Our unique go at your own pace program allows you to finish in as little as six weeks, while offering the flexibility to take up to a year to finish. Best of all, the steps to become a doula are easy to follow.

There’s just four steps to become a certified doula:

  1. Complete all modules of the online curriculum including readings, real world practice, written assignments and tests.
  2. Sign the Scope of Practice
  3. Sign the Doula Code of Conduct Statement
  4. Sign the Disciplinary Standards

And if you’re wondering what step 1 entails, to complete all the modules you will need to:

  • Complete each module in our online curriculum
  • Observe a childbirth class
  • Receive your tentative certification
  • Attend two births as a birth doula within one year of receiving your certification

That’s it! You’re a certified birth doula.

Can I Really Balance a Doula Journey and Parenthood?

While everyone’s circumstances are unique, many parents find doula work meshes perfectly with parenthood. Why? While life on-call has its challenges, it affords a certain flexibility. You can choose how many families you support each month as well as what areas you serve.

As far as completing your training while balancing parenthood, our program is designed to be completed at your own pace. Many parents can squeeze their doula training work in between naps, school days, after bedtime and on weekends.

What Our Students Say

If you are wondering if you can truly balance parenthood, perhaps another career, and doula training, rest assured many people are able to do it! If they can do it, you can become a doula too!

Here’s what some of our now Certified Doulas and former students said:

“My experience with IDI has been amazing. I love the freedom of being able to do my programs online and go at my own pace. The instructors are supportive and they help whenever you need it. I very much appreciate the Facebook group community they have for the students, it’s a great way to network and get to know other students on the same journey as me. The best overall is that I was able to make monthly payments, whereas in other programs you have to pay for them all at once.” – Tanesha

“International Doula Institute made it so easy by offering a “go at your own pace” course. This was such a benefit as I had multiple major life changes happen within the year I took this course. Each of the assignments helped develop my skills, knowledge and passion to serve families from all walks of life. I especially loved writing several papers on different cultural practices regarding birth and postpartum. The assignments challenged me to rethink everything I knew (or heard) about birth and to approach it in a way that now includes non-biased knowledge and facts. This course encourages you to never stop learning about birth and postpartum. Every staff member and teacher was always kind and answered any questions I had. It truly had been a 10/10 experience with this course and I am so grateful for the skills it has taught me!” – Mikayla

Testimonials

Tracy tells us,
“This course was informative and educational. I enjoyed learning how to become a doula.”

Patricia shared,
“This course was great. I loved how easy it is to use, as someone who is not very technologically inclined. The coursework was challenging and I learned so much. My instructor was always very easy to reach and very responsive to any issues I had. I loved being able to work at my own pace and skip around a bit. Videos are hard for me as I am very self-conscious so it was nice to be able to postpone them for a bit until I could really practice and feel my best. ”

Judith shared,
“The instructors and course materials/videos were all so wonderful and informative. I truly feel very well equipped with all the knowledge and tools I now have to start as a full spectrum doula with multiple certifications under my belt. Thank you, IDI, from the bottom of my heart. My true passion is blossoming before my very eyes!”

Miranda tells us,
“I started my training at IDI almost a year ago. The courses have given me exactly what I needed to become a confident doula! After looking at several different doula training programs I decided on IDI because I have two young children and could work at my own pace online. I also really liked that the curriculum was contributed to by different backgrounds and trainings, not only from one perspective. This program has offered more to me than I ever could have thought! Not only have I learned how to support Moms and families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum but I’ve been given tools in growing my reach and communication… just to name a few. There’s also huge support from other doulas in the program. I recommend this program to future doulas!”

Mary says,
“Started my journey (with admitted fear) only a month ago and felt immediately at ease! This program is very fluid. Work at your own pace. Easy to reach help and support the whole way through. Everything you need to know to hit the ground running with confidence once certified.”

Brenda tells us,
“My name is Brenda and I have been studying with IDI for a while now, looking forward to the Postpartum course also. I have found the studies, books, and information to feel well rounded in information and comprehensive. I love all the books they have chosen for my studies. Also, the opportunity to be hands-on with the additional class, interviews, videos, and Moms-to-be. This is a part of the program that brings all the reading, studying…everything to light! The teachers are kind, understanding and obviously VERY experienced and can guide and support me throughout this wonderful journey of certification to be a “Doula” I’m so happy I chose IDI to be my training! Thank you!!!! I look forward to the future!♡”

Joyce says,
“I love being a student with IDI!”

Laura tells us,
” Easy to do at my own pace, good supplemental readings. ”

Hannah tells us,
” Hey this is Hannah! I’m SOO excited to have finished my courses & have become a CERTIFIED DOULA! I almost can’t believe I have that title, with my name!!! This has been a lifelong dream. I’m very grateful to have been able to do it online, as I am a stay-at-home mom to 7 amazing children. It was very convenient for me to work on, as I had quiet time, during my little’s naps. Having been through labor, birth & breastfeeding stages of my life, helped tremendously. However, it was a very practical course & easy to understand the instructions. I highly recommend IDI to anyone who is interested in becoming a doula!! Thank you, IDI!!! ”

Tatyana says,
“I enjoyed everything about this course. Very informative and detailed.”
