Doula Salary

How much do doulas make?

Doula Salary

You are probably considering becoming a doula for reasons of the heart, and while a passion for moms and baby’s is of utmost importance, it’s also important to know how much money you’ll be making.  Just like any job, your doula salary will depend on a multitude of factors, the largest one being where you live/cost of living in your area. To see a list of cities with the highest cost of living in the US, click here.

Birth Doula Salary

Birth Doulas in big cities such as San Francisco, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles and New York charge about $1600-$2000 per birth. If a doula averages 4 births per month, that is 48 per year and your income would be about $86,400/per year.

Birth Doulas in big cities where the cost of living is lower than the above cities, such as Cincinnati, San Diego, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Austin will charge about $900-$1400 per birth. Per year, this would be about $43,200-$67,200.

Birth Doulas in smaller towns will charge between $600-$1200 depending on your clientele. Per year, this would be about $28,800-$57,600.

Postpartum Doula Salary

Postpartum Doulas in big cities such as San Francisco, Washington DC, Boston, Los Angeles and New York charge about $35-$65 per hour. If a postpartum doula averages 40 hours per week, your income would be about $72,800-$135,200/per year.

Postpartum Doulas in big cities where the cost of living is lower than the above cities, such as Cincinnati, San Diego, Philadelphia, Atlanta and Austin will charge about $35-$45 per hour. Per year, this would be about $72,800-$93,600

Postpartum Doulas in smaller towns will charge between $25-$35 per hour depending on your clientele. Per year, this would be about $48,000-$72,800.

Most doulas chose to combine birth and postpartum doula services and as you can see, by offering both services it provides continuity of care for your clients, and allows you to have two sources of revenue for your doula business.

To see how much doulas in your area are charging, consider doing a google search “doula services in {your city}” and review their website to see how much they charge for their services.
